Lighting Design Techniques: Wall Washing

Navigating the world of design can be overwhelming; a lot of decisions are permanent or would be costly to re-design. You always wonder if you’re making the right choice and if you’ll like it.  When it comes to lighting, planning for the right applications will make a world of difference in your living experience.

What Is Wall Washing?

Going through your lighting plan will require confirming all the correct pieces of art, walls, surfaces and paths are appropriately illuminated. One key thing to remember is architectural plans are 2D while we live in 3D. A common thought process from a lot of designers while creating a lighting plan is making sure the floors are illuminated evenly using a grid of fixtures placed in the ceiling. While the floors will be illuminated evenly, this approach gives no depth to the space.

Wall washing reflects light on the perimeter of the space with a wide beam lens creating an indirect lighting effect. This will create depth and interest by illuminating the walls. It is an ideal application to add in an extra layer of light that is impactful and useful.

When To Use Wall Washing

A common misconception about wall washing is you don’t need to light up your walls if it’s not an accent wall or artwork isn’t on the wall. The best part about wall washing is you can and should illuminate your empty walls for two very specific reasons:

  • Maybe someday you’ll want to display artwork or photos on the walls. This will ensure anything put up there is illuminated even if it wasn’t planned for initially.
  • Indirect light is always more comfortable than direct light. When you have the walls illuminated around you as opposed to directly above you, the indirect light creates a better living experience. Think of wall washing like a warm blanket of light.

What to Plan for When Wall Washing

Throughout any lighting design preparation, placement does matter for lighting fixtures. It is part of creating the whole living experience and whether or not it will create a comfortable space. Placing a fixture for wall washing is straightforward; whether the fixture is recessed or surface mounted, they’ll need to be 24 inches to 42 inches off the wall and placed the same distance apart from each other.  It really is that simple.
